A Trip to a Village- Part I

Diwali has always been an occasion to celebrate with your near and dear ones. However, as the flight tickets cost did not suit my meagre financial allowances, my holiday plans went kaput. But as they say, there is always light at the other end of the tunnel, my thoughts were interrupted by the loud ringing phone. It was my Praveen’s call. Well, he had a plan already made out for diwali holidays; a visit to his native village nearby.

So, I and another of my financial constrained friend, Anuj, decided to accompany Praveen (PD) on a two day trip: The trip to Kondetu village. Praveen (PD) left a day earlier due to some prior  engagements.

We boarded the already booked KSRTC bus, which as expected was running one and half hour late within Bangalore! Nevertheless, this delay failed to dent our high spirits, firstly because we were going as a guest/ mehmaan and secondly because we were not paying for any of the trip expenses. The whole trip we assumed was being planned and paid by our very good friend Praveen (this is an assumption which we always take for granted, by not letting out our purses)

The bus journey went fine with just a few problems like the cold, the mosquitoes and the overloaded passengers. However as told earlier, you never crib on a free trip :-).

The instructions from PD were strict, you have to stop at ‘so-and-so’ stand else you will be doomed.

The Reason: At 2:30am if you miss the ‘so-and-so’ stop PD will not be welcoming:-)

image So we got down at the designated stop and found PD and his young brother already waiting for us. The stop was a few miles away from the village, and in their bikes we set out on a narrow lane which turned dusty after few miles. The night was chilly but the beautiful view of rocky hills on one side of dusty pathway and lush green pastures on the other, and everything radiating under the full moon and star studded sky, made us forget the chill.

In a few minutes we were awakened from our dream and ushered silently inside the house. We could hear the snoring of fast asleep elderly people, therefore, without disturbing them we silently changed and sprang into our already laid out beds in the veranda. I had some premonition about mosquitoes playing spoilsport, but it wasn’t meant to be. In a short while, we too were contributing equally to the sound entropy in the house.
